An indicator is a substance whose colour changes in order to indicate a chemical reaction. Indicators usually indicate the pH of a solution or whether or not a reaction is a redox reaction or not.

Litmus is a pH indicator, as is universal indicator and phenolphthalein.

The most commonly used redox indicator is Methylene blue.
