Atoms or Groups of atoms bearing charges are known as " ions ".
The number of protons would not be equal to the no: of electrons , in an ion.

There are two types of ions :-

✪ Positively charged Ions [ Cations ]
✪ Negatively Charged Ions [ Anions ]

Cations are those ions which are positively charged.
These ions give away its electrons to make themselves stable
For example : Mg²⁺ , Fe²⁺ etc ...

Anions are those ions which are negatively charged.
These ions take electrons from other elements to make itself stable.
Examples : Cl⁻ , S²⁻

Answer:

A positively or negatively charged atom is known as an ion (or group of atoms).

What are the types of Ion?

  • An ion is created when an atom loses or gains electrons; as a result, it has more electrons than protons.
  • Examples include the ions sodium (Na+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl-), and oxide (O2-).

Following are the types of Ion

  1. Cation=Cation refers to an ion that is positively charged. Example: A sodium atom loses one electron to create the cation sodium ion, Na+:All metal elements have cations as their ions.
  2. Anion=An anion is a negatively charged ion. When an atom gains one or more electrons, an anion is created.
  • An anion is an atom that has more electrons than a regular atom. For instance, a chlorine atom gains one electron to produce the chloride ion, Cl-.
  • Equal numbers of protons and electrons make up a normal atom, also known as a neutral atom.
  • An anion has more electrons than protons because it is created by the addition of one or more electrons to an atom. All non-metal elements have anions as their ions.
