Ions are electrically charged particles formed when atoms lose or gain electrons. They have the same electronic structures as noble gases. Metal atoms formpositiveions, while non-metal atoms form negative ions. The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions are called ionic bonds.
For example, Na. The atomic number of Na is 11, which means, the electron configuration of Na will be

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1

Na has one electron valence. Na tends to release that last electron to form the cation (positive charged ion), which is Na+

So Na becomes ion by releasing its electron valence

Another example is Cl, the atomic number is 17, and the electron configuration is

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5

Cl has seven electron valence, it needs one more electron for them to have electron valence like the nobel gas (8, octet rule) so Cl tends to gain electron from another atom. When Cl gains an electron, it becomes an anion (negative charged ion), which is Cl-

So Cl- becomes an ion by gaining an electron from another atom

I hope it helps;)

Good luck!
