Those compounds containing ionic bonds are called ionic compounds. And the process of presenting this in terms of formulas are called ionic equation.
For example- Na plus + Cl minus -------> NaCl
Here, in this case Na atom loses one electron whereas Cl atom gains one electron to have complete electric configuration.
