It is a living tissue of primary body like Parenchyma. Cells are thin-walled but possess thickening of cellulose, water and pectin substances (pectocellulose) at the corners where number of cells join together.

The primary purpose of sclerenchyma is to provide mechanical support. Collenchymaon the other hand makes the plant body flexible by bringing plasticity. A growing plant body can stay upright because of sclerenchyma, whereas it can be bent and brought back to its original position without breaking it because of collenchyma.
