Definition :-
- The term olfactory means relating to the sense of smell.
- A substance whose smell/odour changes when treated with acidic or basic solutions is called an olfactory indicator. Onion and vanilla are the most common olfactory indicators used.
Examples with explanation :-
- Onion has a characteristic smell. When basic solutions like sodium hydroxide is added to onion extract, then the smell of onion cannot be detected. On the other hand, an acidic solution will not destroy the smell of an onion.
- Vanilla extract also has a characteristic smell. If a basic solution is added to vanilla extract, we cannot detect the smell. On the other hand, an acidic solution will not destroy the smell of vanilla.
