The reaction in which a substance gains oxygen or loses hydrogen is called an oxidation reaction. For example, when copper (Cu) is heated in the presence of air, it gets oxidised to form copper oxide (CuO). The chemical equation involved in this reaction can be represented as Since heat energy is absorbed in this process, this reaction is endothermic nature.

                          Oxidation reaction

  • Oxidation is generally termed as the reaction where oxygen combines with other elements or compounds.
  • For example: When a wood log is burn in air (oxygen), carbon dioxide is produced. Thus, oxygen combines with Carbon and formed carbon dioxide.
  • Oxidation is an "exothermic reaction" as it releases heat and light while the reaction takes place.
  • In general, exothermic reaction is the reaction where "energy is released" in the form of heat and light.
  • The "word exothermic" is composed of two words — exo meaning release and  thermic meaning related to heat.
