Some points on oxidising agents are as follows:-

  • Oxidation agent are the substances that accept electrons in a chemical reaction (electron accpetors).

  • It is also known as oxidant.

  • Oxidising agents are lewis acids.

  • These substances oxidise others and get reduced themselves.

  • It also shows decreament in oxidation Number.

Examples of oxidising agents include:-

  • All high electronegative elements such as N,O,F,Cl etc.

  • All metallic oxides such as Li2O,Na2O,CaO,MgO etc but also includes some non metallic oxides.

  • All neutral compounds and ions in which elements show their highest oxidation state or number, will act as an oxidising agent such as SnCl4 ,HNO3, HClO4 etc.
