Radioactive isotope is any of several species of the same chemical element with different masses whose nuclei are unstable and dissipate excess energy by emitting different radiations in the form of beta, alpha and gamma rays

Hi.

Good question...Keep Progressing...

Here is your answer----

The isotopes of some elements after the Atomic No. 82  are Unstable and radioactive . These Isotopes emits αlpha/βeta/Gamma radiations to become Stable. These isotopes are known as an radioactive isotopes.

Examples of the Radioactive Isotopes are----
@---Radio sodium Chloride.
@---Radio Iron.
@--- Cobalt-60
@---Carbon -14
@---Uranium-232
@---Uranium-235

In these isotopes the number of Neutrons are much more than the number of Protons , this is the reason why they are radioactive.

These radioactive isotopes are used fro various medical and industrial purposes. There uses are prescribed below---

Medical uses---

i) Gamma radiations obtained from the cobalt-60 isotopes used to kill the cancers cell in the malignant tumour of the patient.

ii) Weak radioactive isotopes such as radio sodium chloride or radio Iron is used as a tracers in diagnosis .They are used for studying the radioactivity of the blood in different part of the body

iii) Gamma radiation obtained from the radioactive isotopes are also used for sterilizing Bandages, surgical instruments .

Industrial uses---

i) Uranium-232 is used as a fuel in nuclear reactors.

ii) Gamma Radiations obtained from the Radioactive isotope(C -12) is used for Determining the ages of the fossils fuels. This process is known as Carbon-dating.

iii) By knowing the penetration powers of the radiations obtained from the radioactive isotopes, they are used for controlling the thickness of the papers sheets.
