Historically, mathematics is Greek. Pythagoras, Socrates, Archimedes, Aristotle, Plato, all were greek. Mathematics is deeply rooted in Greek.

The original sum sign was a greek letter, as is the sign for “change in,” or delta, the standard sign for an angle, theta, and more.

We could have changed them to the English alphabet, yes, but that could pose some problems. The biggest example is pi, which is, of course, Greek. If we just used “p,” it could be mistaken as a variable.

Having these special meanings be represented by Greek variables can help distinguish them from variables, but honestly, the biggest reason is, why change it? It’s historical, it works, and that’s that.
