During the electrolytic refining process, anode (which is made up of impure metal) undergoes reaction in which pure metal is deposited at the cathode, leaving impurities behind. The soluble impurities go into the solution, whereas, the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the anode and are known as anode mud.

The impurities which are dissolved in ores are seperated while electrolytic refining and set at the bottom , this set impurity is called anode mud .
