Metals like aluminium develop an oxide layer when exposed to air. This oxide layer protects the metal from corrosion. This layer can be made thicker by a process called anodizing.

In anodizing, the pure aluminium article is taken as the anode and it is electrolysed with sulphuric acid. The oxygen gas evolved at the anode reacts with the aluminium metal, thus forming a protective oxide layer.

This method is very useful in protecting metals from corrosion.
