The expansion of water when it is cooled from 4°C to 0°C, is known as the anomalous expansion of water.

If we take some water at 0°C and start heating it, we find that in the temperature from 0°C to 4°C, it contracts instead of expanding. On heating it further above 4°C, it expands. Similarly, if water is cooled at a temperature from above  4°C, it contracts but on further cooling from 4°C to 0°C, the water expands instead of contraction. This property of expansion of water when it cooled is called anomalous expansion of water.

Hope this helps you.
