Given, :-

Let the length for the wires be 'L' and area of cross section be 'A'. Then,

• For wire I -

Resistivity = p1

Length = L

Area = A

Resistance = R1

Then,

R1 = p1 × (L / A) ....... (i)

• For wire II -

Resistivity = p2

Area = A

Length = L

Resistance = R2

Then,

R2 = p2 × (L / A) ...... (ii)

Since, they both are connected in series, then,

R(eq) = R1 + R2

=> R(eq) = p1 × (L / A) + p2 × (L / A)

=> R(eq) = (L / A) × (p1 + p2)

Then, equivalent resistivity for tue same area = p1 + p2

Hence, the required answer = p1 + p2
