Anne and Peter's affection for each other was growing day by day as she writes in her entry for June 13, 1944. But some mysterious force was holding them back and Anne could not fathom what it could be. Her terrible longing for Peter would occasionally seem to her to be exaggerated but she knew that it was not so. She would long for him desperately if she was unable to meet him for a day or two. Peter was kind and good but she could not deny that he disappointed her in many ways. She did not care for his dislike of religion, his table conversations and various things of that nature. Still she was firmly convinced that they ought to stick to the agreement of not to quarrel ever. He was peace-loving, tolerant and extremely easygoing which made it easy for Anne to confide in him. He made a determined effort to remove the blots from his copybooks and keep his affairs in order. But he would hide his innermost self and never allow Anne any access to his private thoughts. He was much more closed off than Anne but she knew from experience that with time, even the most uncommunicative types longed as much or even more to confide in someone. Peter and Anne were spending their contemplative years in the Annex, this naturally steered their discussions towards, the future, past and present. Yet Anne missed the real thing and she knew that it did exist, something was not quite there for her. Peter could be a good companion but not what Anne was looking for.

Hope it's help
