It is also known as Royal water and it is a mixture of HCl and HNO3 in the ratio of 3: 1,active chlorine is formed when HCl react with HNO3 and this active chlorine react with gold and platinum to form gold chloride and platinum chloride.
Reaction: HCl + HNO3 ------- NOCL + H2O + Cl
NOCl = Nitrosye chlorine
Cl = active chlorine.
Au + Cl2 -------- AuCl3
Pt + Cl2 ------- PtCl4
