Archimedes' principle states that “When a body is immersed completely or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body.” Applications: A hydrometer uses Archimedes' principle to determine the density of any liquid.

When a body is immersed in a liquid, it occupies the space, which was earlier occupied by the liquid, i.e., it displaces the liquid. The volume of liquid displaced by the body is equal to the volume of the submerged parts of the body so the body experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by it.
