Most silk like fabrics are polyester bases in the drapery industry. I make draperies and if clients want the look of silk but not the price or the degradation over time 90% of the fabric on the market as a substitute is polyester. In fact most 100% silk fabrics often have a manmade weft yarn.

Artificial silk, or rayon, is made from cellulose, obtained from cotton or wood pulp. The cellulose is dissolved in a substance called alkaline carbon disulphide to make a thick liquid. This is squirted through tiny holes into a bath of acid. It reforms as fibres, which can be spun into yarn.
