When you use the direct method for finding the mean you get comparatively larger numbers.
By using the assumed mean method (also known as shift of origin) you get smaller numbers to work with (and also negative numbers which reduce the sum) and hence the chance of committing calculation mistakes is lower.
By using assumed mean and shift of origin and change of scale you get still smaller numbers.
It would be advantageous to use the second and third methods, as given above, when you are dealing with larger numbers.

In statistics the assumed mean is a method for calculating the arithmetic mean and standard deviation of a data set.
It simplifies calculating accurate values by hand. Its interest today is chiefly historical but it can be used to quickly estimate these statistics
