Great question. And I applaud your curiosity. Interesting thing is that your question isn't much about astrology per se. Its about how the individuals function in the world via an internal-desire and external-circumstancemanifestation.

The answer will be a bit long, sorry about that. To do justice to the topic I will begin by giving a personal example, then some theory on karma - how it works (basis: my reading on the subject), and how astrology fits in the whole drama of life. I will also touch upon the points you have raised regarding 'if working hard then why bother'. I will borrow some points from Bhagvad Gita and Gautama Buddha, to add credibility to what I'm saying so that should help.

Let me begin with a personal example: My father is a doctor, and a noble and hard working man. One day, I got this phone call from our family astrologer. He asked how are things and quickly came to the point - "How is the right eye of your father?". I said that it should be okay as I haven't got any alarming info from my father. Later that night, I called my father and asked about his eyes. He confirmed that things are okay. A month later, he developed a disease of the eyes in which the images formed by the two eyes wouldn't coincide and he would see everything twice in number. He lost his confidence, and thought that his career is over and that life long he will be dependent on others. I consulted that family astrologer, and he mentioned that we need not worry because the disease would auto-correct in 6 months time. I invited my father to my town, and took him to eye specialists. It turned out that this was a rare case of a disease, that is caused by some muscle around eyes getting sore and usually body cures itself to perfect normality. He got special glasses to wear that contained prisms, and he got perfectly normal in the next 5 months or so.

Karma Theory: A person writes her own life. Gautama Buddha seconds this thought. He gives so much importance to it that he says "karma weaves the entire fabric of life situations". Please notice that he is in accordance with your beliefs when you write:

But. But. But. The difference lies in the way he defines karma. You seem to notice that karma begins with you starting a deed, he says that the deed is started long before you placed a thought over it. And so you thinking and deciding about a thing to be done is coming a bit later in the chain. Its perplexing, I know. However, this is the crux of karma and to quote from a commentary on his discourses:
Please forgive me when I say this: Because you start defining karma after you have consciously started or traveled a path, you would be mistaken in the entire journey of your analysis on life, however you move forward in contemplation.

Instead, and its a request, please consider that whatever you desire at any give time is nothing but the fructification of a karmic tendency that was brought forward in the mind and you just grabbed it saying "I want it. This is me. This desire in mine. And I want it so badly that the universe (or God) should support me if I'm working hard". There is ego rooted in this view - a sense of 'I'ness.

Instead, a yogi sees a desire like this "Here is a desire that has been arisen in the mind. If it is wholesome, let me cultivate it as much as I can earnestly, and surrender to the universe till there is time for another karmic tendencies to ripen up and grab me. If my other karmic tendencies are feeble, then nothing to worry. This desire may continue to ripen to give fruits else that other circumstance needs to be honored just like I honor this desire in me".

Were you able to notice how wide this second context is. There is something very lighthearted and easy going attitude about it. Please also notice that emphasis is indeed on working hard earnestly but also on the flow of events that trigger changes within and around us.

Should this rule be this - "let me cultivate it earnestly, and universe should and must support my goals no matter what"? I don't think so and let me give an example to add substance to my claim.

Suppose I got into a fight with someone when I was 25 years old. And let us suppose that I killed this person purely out of anger. And also suppose that somehow I got to escape any punishment because I was successfully able to hide the body deep underground.
