This is related to statistics.

In ergodic stochastic processes that deal with random variables in large data populations, we use this theory to know the entropy of a variable.

This law of asymptotic equipartition property is derived from the weak law of big (large) numbers.

Suppose X1, X2, X3 ... Xn are values drawn (samples in time for example) from a random variable X (representing a physical quantity). X is a useful quantity for us.  Assume X represents some behaviour of a large population. X could even be height, age, marks etc.  Let X follow a probability distribution function P(X).

    We compute the joint probability of P(X1, X2, X3, X4 ... Xn).

As n→∞,    -1/n * Log₂ P(X1, X2, ...Xn) →  H(X) = The entropy of X
