1] The thrust exerted per unit area on the earth surface due to the column of air, is called the atmospheric pressure.

2] A barometer is an instrument which is used to measure the atmospheric pressure.

3] The barometer functions in measuring the atmospheric pressure at a place. The decrease/increase in height of air column can be measured by a barometer since it causes decrease/increase in atmospheric pressure respectively. Also, the decrease/increase in density of air causes a non-liner decrease/increase in the atmospheric pressure which is also measured by the barometer. It is "non-linear" because it is rapid at low altitude and slow at high altitude.

◼ Barometers are of three types : Simple barometer, Fortin's barometer, Aneroid barometer.

◼ The barometric height at normal temperature and pressure at sea level is 0.76 m (or 76 cm or 760 mm) of mercury.

◼ Our blood contains dissolved oxygen at a pressure, slightly more than the atmospheric pressure. Thus, it counterbalances the atmospheric pressure and hence we do not feel it.
