 {\sf{ \large{ \green{ \underline{ \underline{Atom}}}}}}

Matter is composed of small particles called atoms. Atoms are the smallest unit of matter.

An atom has different subatomic particles know as:

  • Electrons
  • Protons
  • Neutrons

The electrons are negatively charged particles that are present outside the nucleus and revolve in orbits.

The neutrons and protons(positively charged particles) are collectively present in the nucleus.

An atom has different shells or orbits in which the electrons revolve:

  • K-shell: it can accomodate 2 electrons
  • L-shell: it can accomodate 8 electrons
  • M-shell:it can accomodate 18 electrons
  • N-shell:it can accomodate 32 electrons

These orbits are divided into several suborbits too.
