Atom:

  • An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element. Every solids, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms. Atoms are extremely small, typically around 100 picometers across.
  • They are so small that accurately predict their behavior using classical physics- as if they were tennis balls.
  • For example- is not possible due to quantum effects.
  • Most of the atom is empty space. The rest consists of a positively charged nucleus of protons, neutrons surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons.
  • The nucleus is small and dense compared with the electrons, which are the lightest charged particles in nature.

Mass:

  • Mass is both a property of the physical body and a measure of its resistance to acceleration when a net force is applied.
  • An object's mass also determines the strength of its gravitational attraction to other bodies. The SI unit of mass is the kilogram.
  • An object on the Moon would be weightless than it does on earth because of the lower gravity, but it would still have the same mass.
  • This is because weight is a force, while mass is the property that determines the strength of this force.
  • In physics there are different ways of determining the quality of mass. Two of the most commonly used are inertial mass and gravitational mass.
