  • The combining capacity of an atom is known as its valency. The number of bonds that an atom can form as part of a compound is expressed by the valency of the element.
  • Atomicity can be defined as the total number oqf atoms that composes a molecule. Simply put, it is the no of atoms present in a molecule. For example, each molecule of oxygen is composed of two oxygen atoms. So atomicity of oxygen is 2. In older contexts, atomicity is sometimes synonymous with valency.

  • Examples:

  1. Inert gases like helium, neon etc are monoatomic
  2. Hydrogen, Oxygen is diatomic
  3. Ozone is triatomic

Phosphorus(P4) is tetratomic
