Yes that's an oversimplification, but Timur was a factor. To Babur, Timur was like Clive Loyd is to a modern fan of West Indian cricket - a hero of a time when his "team" dominated the world. Plus Timur was his ancestor.

Thus Babur was driven by a deep desire to emulate Timur, bring glory to his name and possibly re-build the empire of Timur.

To this end, growing up the son of a minor ruler in the Ferghana Valley he dreamed of someday ruling nearby Samarkhand, the capital of Timur, which his uncle currently ruled. After his uncle died, he tried three times to conquer Samarkhand. The first time he failed, the second time he won but then had to leave facing an overwhelming force of Uzbeks. This was shameful because while leaving he had to give up his sister. The third and final time was probably most shameful because the people wanted him to leave, preferring the rule of an approaching army of marauding Uzbeks over his "blasphemous" alliance with the Persian Shias.

Between his second and third attempts he had inherited Kabul, when a distant uncle ruling it died heir-less. So he spent many years after his last attempt on Samarkhand quietly ruling over Kabul. Afghanistan is separated from Central Asia (then Mughalistan) by rough enough terrain that there was little risk from an Uzbek invasion there.

But through all this, he still yearned to build an empire like Timur did, and leave a legacy for his children. He just did not know how. Then the battle of Chaldiran happened, where the Ottomans demonstrated how canons could be used effectively against cavalry (Persian cavalry no less). After the battle, as a gift the Ottoman Sultan Selim I sent Babur some canons and a gun master who knew how to use them.

With this new weapon and strategy, Babur turned his eyes towards India, with the objective of building an empire which his children could inherit and grow. We know all this because he meticulously penned his thoughts in a journal, much of which has survived. Unlike histories written by court writers, his journal mostly contained his own honest thoughts, opinions and version of history.

The First Battle of Panipat, on 21 April 1526, was fought between the invading forces of Babur and the Lodi Kingdom. It took place innorth India and marked the beginning of the Mughal Empire.
