Backlash error occurs in screw gauge, when we try to rotate the screw very fast to ... reading, toavoid this we should rotate the screw slowly in only one direction.Backlash, a clearance between mating gear teeth, is built into speed ... On the other hand, the same clearance causes lost motion between reducer input .... overheating of the gears and bearings, and evenseizing and failure. .... Backlash should be avoided in case of measuring instruments like lead screw, screw gauge etc.

back lash error is a kind of instrumental error found in those instruments having a screw, especially those which works on micrometer screw principle like spherometer. It is the error in which due to wear and tear when the screw is moved in one direction and when it is again moved in backward direction it may not be on the same axis and hence your observations may get wrong. It can be avoided by taking all your observations in a way such that you move the screw in one direction only.
