Back suction is when the water is sucked into the funnel due to the lower pressure created there when HCl dissolves in water.

Back suction is caused when the rate of absorption exceeds the rate of production of HCl or Ammonia gas. This causes a low pressure in the flask resulting in the water to be pulled into the flask
