what is backlash error in a screw gauge?

backlash error
Sometimes due to wear and tear of the screw threads , it is observed that reversing the direction of the rotation of the thimble , tip of screw doesn't start moving in opp. direction immediately , but remain stationary for a part of rotation this is called backlash error .
