It is wear and tear type error.
Sometimes happen when we measure the diameter of wire and then if we rotate the dial in opposite direction the will remain stationary and then move, this is black lash error.
OR
we there is another definition for this that if rotate the dial very fast to measure the diameter of wire the it slips after measuring the wire basically you are pressing the wire and decreasing the diameter of that wire so it will give the false reading.

Backlash error: Sometimes due to wear and tear of the screw threads, it is observed that reversing the direction of rotation of the thimble, the tip of the screw does not start moving in the opposite direction immediately, but remains stationary for a part of rotation. This is called back lash error.
