Back lash error occurs when an individual translates the scale by rotating the screw. The thread of the screw on the stage does not fill the gap perfectly. So, while moving in one direction, the person can see that the screw will rotate without moving the system, which will cause back lash. Also, travelling microscope's vernier scale can have some gap; so when you move the vernier scale, it may move without moving the system and thus will give an inaccurate number.
