Backlash error occurs in screw gauge, when we try to rotate the screw very fast to ... reading, toavoid this we should rotate the screw slowly in only one direction.Backlash, a clearance between mating gear teeth, is built into speed ... On the other hand, the same clearance causes lost motion between reducer input .... overheating of the gears and bearings, and even seizing and failure. .... Backlash should be avoided in case of measuring instruments like lead screw, screw gauge etc.

Answer:

It happens due to wear and tear of the screw threads. To avoid the backlash error, while taking the measurements the screw should be rotated in one direction only. If the direction of rotation of the screw needs to be changed, then it should be stopped for a while and then rotated in the reverse direction.
