Bagging is a technique used to prevent the fertilization of stigma from undesired pollen by covering the emasculated flower with butter-paper. It is useful in a plant breeding programme because only desired pollen grains for pollination and protection of the stigma from contamination of undesired pollen.

Emasculation i.e. removal of anthers from the bisexual flowers is followed by covering the stigma with poly covers/butter paper to ensure pollination of stigma with pollen from desired plant only and to prevent self-pollination. Covering the stigma with bags is called the as bagging technique which helps to prevent contamination of stigma with undesired pollens as well as ensure pollination with pollens from desired male parent during breeding programme.
