Baking soda or Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate is an insoluable compound of Sodium. To make Baking soda, a cold and concentrated solution sodium chloride solution is reactd with ammonia and carbon dioxide.

Th e equation for above reaction is :

NaCl + H2O + CO2 + NH3 ------- NH4Cl + NaHCO3. 2NaHCO3 ------- Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O.

Uses of Baking soda are :

(i) It is used for making baking powder.

(ii) It is used in soda-fire extinguishers.
