Using a potentiometer, we can determine the emf of a cell by obtaining the balancing length 'l'.
Here, the fall of potential along the length 'l' of the potentiometer wire is equal to the emf of the cell, as no current is being drawn from the cell. Then, or, ; where 'k' is the potential gradient along the wire.

Balancing length in potentiometer means to balance length of wire in potentiometer by jockey.

●A potentiometer circuit is used to determine internal resistance and emf of cell.

●Balancing length of potentiometer is propotional to E ,emf of battery for which internal resistance is to be measured.

=Internal resistance(r)=【l1/l2-1】R

Where R is external resistance in circuit and l1 and l2 are balancing length of potentiometer.
