Answer:

In chemistry, Base are substance that releases (OH-) ions in aqueous solutions and more of the following Charateristics:

1. Turn Red litmus paper blue

2. React with Acids to form Salts

3. Accept protons from any proton donor or contain completely or partially displaceable OH− ions

4. Promote certain chemical reactions eg Base Catalysts

5. Can be Slippery to touch

Base can be thought of as chemical opposites of Acids. Said this, some strong Acids are able to act as Bases.

Base :-

Bases are those compounds which are metal oxides or metal hydroxide or aqueous ammonia and these react with hydronium ion (H3O+) of acids to produce salt and water.

Strong base :-

These get completely dissolved in water to produce OH- ions.

Example - NaOH, KOH

Weak base :-

These are partially soluble in water.

Example - Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2.

Characteristics of bases :-

They are bitter to taste.

• They are soapy to touch and are harmful for skin.

• These turn litmus to blue.

• These turn turmeric to red brown colour.

• These react with acids to produce salts and water.

• They turn phenolphthalein solution to pink.
