It is better to not think of a laser as a "type of light", but rather wavelength(s) within the electromagnetic spectrum. Light, as you know it, is also part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
There are two important differences:
Light from a flashlight is mostly unpolarized whereas light from a laser is polarized
Light from a flashlight is polychromatic (containing wavelengths roughly in the range of 400-700 nanometers, in other words, it contains all colors of light) whereas light from a laser is monochromatic (very close to a singular wavelength, as far as I know, it is impossible for a laser to be perfectly monochromatic).
