The Indian Rebellion of 1857 is also described as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, North India's was the first major War of Independence or North India's first effort for autonomy. It started on 10 May 1857 at Meerut, as resistance of sepoys of the British East India Company's soldiers. Sepoys in the Presidency of Bengal rebelled against their British administrators.

The Bengal Army obtained above castes, such as Rajputs and Bhumihar brahmins in their army. They cut back the enrollment of lower castes in 1855.
