Sometimes in very technical disciplines teams are used to obfuscate that really only one person is responsible for the team succeeding vs not succeeding. That one person isn't necessarily the boss, in which case the boss is basically useless and should be replaced by that one person. Let's call this person the "Meritus". This doesn't mean the one person is doing all the work, but that they are doing all the problem solving/anticipation, contingency planning, creative thinking etc. The boss then might still be doing some administrative work to handle the number of employees, but these duties could easily be handled by the "Meritus". Say you are the "Meritus". If the workload isn't too much, you might be able to cut costs by a huge factor and remove all the other people (assuming you had the authority or means to pursue the project alone) The problem is, it's hard to stay motivated alone. No one cares what you are doing. No one recognizes goals and milestones. Everything seems like pie in the sky thinking. It's absurd to think of a useless boss, teammate or even someone you hired who doesn't fully understand what you are doing to give you kudos every time you have a project success. However, without someone with some ability to recognize your accomplishments, you might feel unmotivated and wonder what the point is in a technical discipline with many long steps. So I would say at least have one or two other people None of this applies if you have equally capable people or are talking simplistic, physical goals. In many cases teams are clearly better such as when everyone has a skill that is needed to accomplish any goal.
Hope it helps ^^
