THE ORIGIN OF THE PET
By XYZ (name)
It is no secret that a pet is a bundle of joy that fills our days with life and laughter. Be it a dog, a cat, a fish or a hamster, pets have so much to offer. The amount of solace the lick of a dog or the soft purr of a cat provides after a tiring day is simply incomparable. Though they often live for only a few years, the footprints they leave on the sands of our minds are indelible.
However, a major trend we see nowadays is people's obsession with exotic breeds of pets. A dog simply has to be a golden retriever, a cat just has to be an American shorthair, and a bird isn't a pet if it's not a budgie. Needless to say, this habit of buying pets rather than adopting them has some adverse consequences. For one, exotic breeds aren't as easy on the pocket. One needs quite a lot of money to buy them. In addition, they aren't as disease resistant as their stray counterparts. So, trips to the vet are frequent and costly. Exotic breeds also run a grave risk of developing chronic illnesses like joint problems and cancer. But perhaps, the most important ill effect is that buying a pet gives impetus to the growth of pet mills. These are mills that generate puppies by rampantly, mercilessly breeding adult dogs and cats and keeping them in deplorable conditions.
On the other hand, lies the option of adopting a stray. They are friendly, cheerful and relatively free of diseases. More importantly, every single stray that finds a home leads to one less stray living on the road, living off scarce food and constantly at risk of being run over by vehicles. They are more in need of human love and care than exotic pets are.
Hence, it is always a better idea to adopt a pet than to buy one. It is important for all of us to be aware of the chain effects of every single decision we make- including the adverse consequences of buying a pet off the shelves of a shop rather than taking in an adorable stray thirsty for human affection.
