benzene hexachloride

a liquid hydrocarbon, C6H6, obtained mainly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of coal, used as a solvent. It is irritant, toxic, and carcinogenic. benzene hexachloride (BHC) a chlorinated hydrocarbon; one isomer, gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane) is used as an insecticide, to kill lice.

It is prepared by chlorination of benzene in presence of sunlight. The mixture of stereoisomeric hexachlorides is an active component in BHC is γ isomer, called gammaxene or lindane. Uses. BHC is an important agricultural pesticide mainly used for exterminating white ants, leaf hopper, termite etc.
