Definition :

The word nomenclature is derived from 2 terms that are Latin in origin and are :

  • nomen - it stands for name
  • cleature - i.e to call..

Hence this can be considered as the standard system of naming an organism by giving them 2 part names.

History of nomenclature

This system was introduced by Carolus Linnaeus.

He is popularly known as father of modern taxonomy.

  • The first name stands for "Genus" .
  • While second represents "species'.

Eg : Panthera tigris here panthera represents Genus and tigris stands for species

Plant nomenclature:

  • Plants are given binary names and rules will remain same for both plants and animals too.
  • Names are usually in Latin being a dead language.
  • First letter of name should always be in capital while other being small.

Some common examples.

  • Zingiber officinale - Ginger
  • Citrus Limonium - Lemon
  • Nicotina tobaccum - Tobacco
  • Bamboosa aridinarifolia - Bamboo plant .

More ..

  • The binomial names given are universal and everyone has to follow the certain guidelines laid to use them.
  • Sometimes this name can be given in honour of the famous scientist, Discoverer , or any public figure like singer or actor.
  • Bill Gates , Barak obama do have spiders named after them .
