The main cause of the loss of biodiversitycan be attributed to the influence of human beings on the world's ecosystem, In fact human beings have deeply altered theenvironment, and have modified theterritory, exploiting the species directly, for example by fishing and hunting, changing the biogeochemical cycles and ...

★ Biodiversity :

The term biodiversity simply refers to the variety of living species on Earth, including flora (palnts), fauna (animals), bacteria and fungi.

Our planet's biodiversity is so rich and diverse that many species are yet to be discovered. At the same time, many species are considered endangered and some are even extinct. Varying environmental conditions along with human activities are responsible for the mass extinction of many plant and animal species around the globe.

■ Types of biodiversity :

There are three main types of biodiversity :-

Genetic diversity : genetic diversity refers to the diversity which is seen within the same species.

Species diversity : species diversity refers to the the diversity which occur between different species.

Ecosystem diversity : ecosystem diversity refers to the diversity between different ecosystems.

● Reasons for the loss of biodiversity :

The main reasons for the loss of biodiversity all over the world are listed below :-

Habitat loss and fragmentation : large habitats when broken lead to loss of habitat for animals needing large territories (are badly affected) – population decline.

Over exploitation : over exploitation of nature's resources leads to extinction of many, especially commercially important species.

Alien species invasion : alien species when introduced may turn invasive causing decline and extinction of indigenous species.

Coextinction : When a species become extinct, the plant and animal species associated with it in an obligatory way also becomes extinct. When a host fish species becomes extinct, its unique assemblage of parasites also meet the same fate.
