Winnowing out the diversity allows predators and diseases to deal with only one kind of defense. If we limit our world to only one kind of XXXXX plant, then that monoculture leaves us vulnerable to a fungus mutation, or a change in the pest ecology, or other environmental change that could wipe out that single species. In the mid-1960s, the International Rice Research Institute presented the world with a new and improved hybrid, IR8, the Miracle Rice. It matured in 17 weeks instead of over 21 weeks and yielded 30 percent more, driving numerous rice varieties out of cultivation. It needed pesticides and fertilizers, and the locusts immediately adapted and overcame the insecticides. And IR8was chalky tasting and broke easily in milling. Another hybrid was needed to fill the hole, and then another, and another. IR20 was made immune against one disease, but was easypickings for an existing virus and brown plant-hoppers. IR26 resisted the virus and the pests, but was weak and subject to wind damage. The researchers thought to bring in genes froma special type of Taiwanese wind-resistant rice, but Taiwanese farmers had given up growing that rice and it was extinct. IR36 was used in 65 percent of Philippine and 60 percent of Indonesian paddy fields, but the brown plant-hopper took only four years to destroy IR36's value as a crop. Hybrid rices, grown uniformly on millions of hectares, are too easily threatened by hordes of plant pests.Thailand didn't join in the hybrid revolution, growing the new riceson only 10 percent of rice acreage during one season, and instead continuing to cultivate hundreds of traditional varieties. Thailand suffered no major epidemics for decades, and avoidedpesticide contamination of soil and water.[Summarized fromMuchDependsonDinner, by Margaret Visser, 1986, Collier Books.]What does it take to protect the USA's corn monoculture, and what will happen when a really serious threat comes along?

the number of different kinds of plants and animals that makes healthy environment after coming all together is considered to be biodiversity it is kind useful for humans as well because it helps us to understand how variable the nature could be what could be the different forms of nature and as all the organisms are being different so they could be used differently they good teach us some different things therefore biodiversity is kind useful for humans as well
