  • Breeding of crops with higher levels of vitamins and minerals or higher protein and healthier fats is called Biofortification.
  • Plant breeding programme is undertaken for improving the nutritional quality of plants with the objectives like : (i) Protein content and quality, (ii) Oil content and quality, (iii) Vitamin contents and (iv) Micronutrient and mineral content.
  • Examples : Maize hybrids with high lysine and tryptophan content, wheat variety Atlas 66 having a high protein content has been used as doner for improving cultivated wheat, Vitamin A enriched carrot, Vitamin C enriched bitter gourd etc.
