✔️moreover this concentration keeps on increasing as we move on from lower organisms to higher, which eat them.

ex.
✴️if in water concentration of some toxic chemical is 0.003ppb ,
✴️ then in plankton it is 0.04 ppm ,
✴️ in fish which eat planktons it's concentration reaches about 0.5 ppm
✴️in fish eating birds upto 5 ppm

hence we can see it increases at each trophic level.

Heavy metals and persistent pesticides (e.g., organochlorine or chlorinated hydrocarbons like DDT) pass into food chain and increase in amount per unit weight of organisms with the rise in tropic level due to their accumulation in fat. This phenomenon is called biomagnification

e.g.,
DDT concentration in aquatic food chain
0.003 ppb(parts per billion)in water,
0.003 ppm(parts per million) in phytoplankton,
0.04 ppm in zooplankton,
0.5ppm in small fish
2.0 ppm in predator fish
25ppm in fish eating birds like seagulls.

some severe effects to environment due to biomagnification:

-These biomagnified chemicals disturb the calcium metabolism in birds. This results in thinning of egg Shells and their premature breaking that kills the embryos.

-Cerebral haemorrhage

-Liver cirrhosis

-Hypertension

-Population of Bald Eagle had declined due to biomagnification.

-Softening of brain.
