Organic matter used as a fuel and especially in a power station to generate electricity is called biomass.Biomass can either be used directly via combustion to produce heat, or indirectly after converting it to various forms of bioful. Conversion of biomass to biofuel can be achieved by different methods which are broadly classified into: thermal, chemical, and biochemical methods.

Biomass is the biological material derived from living organisms. Energy is derived directly from biomass  via combustion to produce heat or indirectly after  converting it into various forms of biofuel with the help of thermal, chemical & biochemical methods. Wood is the main source  of biomass energy.

Using biomass as a fuel produces air pollution in the form of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, Nitrogen oxides , VOCs, particulates and other pollutants at level above those from traditional fuel source. Black carbon, a pollutant created by combustion of biomass and biofuel is possibly the 2nd largest contributor to global warming.
