Biosphere:
- The Biosphere is a 'sum of all ecosystems'. It is a 'closed system' and is also known as the 'zone of life'. It exists for 3.5 billion years.
- The biosphere is a layer where life 'exists on the ground' and also in the air. The other layers include the 'lithosphere, hydrosphere', and 'atmosphere' wherein the biosphere is unique.
- The biosphere is benefited due to the 'food web' as the nutrients of the remains of plants and animals that are dead are released into the soil which is then re-absorbed by the plants that are growing. So, this exchange of food and nutrients lets the Biosphere remain as a self-supporting system.

Answer: The biosphere can be defined as the narrow contact zone between the lithosphere, hydrosphere and the atmosphere, where life forms exist.
Life on Earth is possible because of :
- It's optimum distance from the Sun.
- The presence of a protective atmosphere.
- The availability of adequate water required for life forms.
The word bios means ' life' in Greek.
