For example, 'tris(iodide)' is used for ( I X − ) X 3 (rather than 'triiodide', which is used for I X 3 X − );
'bis(phosphate)' is used for ( P O X 4 X 3 − ) X 2 (rather than 'diphosphate', which is used for P X 2 O X 7 X 4 − u hope u can understand

Bis is used when the compound is repeated twice.
eg: Bis(ethylene1,2 diammine)copper(II)sulphate  ---> ICu(en)2ISo4^-2


-Here ethylene diammine(en) is repeated twice and therefore we have use bis before en
