✦It is a red , opaque , slightly alkaline fluid.

✦The total volume of blood in adult human being is about 5 to 6 liters.

✦It circulates through cardiovascular system as blood is propelled by the pumping action of heart to tissues through the blood vessels.

The study of blood is termed as Hematology.

Blood has two components :

  • Formed elements , or blood cells (erythrocytes , leukocytes , thrombocytes)that account for 45% of blood volume , and

  • Fluid Plasma that accounts for 55% of blood volume.
